Mark Zuckerberg says he’s concerned about China’s tech regulation agenda

In a streaming video conversation with EU internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton , Mark Zuckerberg said ,he thought China would end up setting the global standard for how governments control internet platforms.

Zuckerberg said that he believes that there are two models emerging for regulating the internet.

“I don’t think that there’s a question that there’s going to be regulation, I think the question is whose framework is going to win around the world. What I worry about is right now I think there are emerging two very different frameworks that are underpinned by very different sets of values,” Zuckerberg said.

He said that China’s model is going to erode human rights.” I just think that that’s really dangerous ,and I worry that kind of model spreading to other countries.”

He also  said that the best way to prevent China getting foothold is for western democracies to build their regulations firsts.

“I just think that that’s really dangerous, and I worry about that kind of model spreading to other countries.””I think the best antidote to that is having a clear regulatory framework that comes out of Western democratic countries and that can become a standard around the world that we can show works well, and that becomes more attractive to countries that are kind of thinking more on the edge about which direction they want to go in.
