Centre comes in as locusts attack spreads in 5 states

As the Locusts have started reaching many states, Centre has come in to help states oj dealing with it. According to The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, locust control operations has been started. These are in states where locusts have arrived.

“89 fire brigades for pesticide spray; 120 survey vehicles. 47 control vehicles with spray equipment and 810 tractor-mounted sprayers have been deployed for effective locust control. As per requirement during different days,” the ministry said.

Currently, Five states – Rajasthan, Punjab, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh – are affected by the swarms. Also, they are moving at great speed.

“As of today, there are active swarms of immature locust in Barmer, Jodhpur, Nagaur, Bikaner, Ganganagar, Hanumangarh. Also, Sikar, Jaipur Districts in Rajasthan and Satna, Gwalior, Seedhi, Rajgarh, Baitul. Also, Devas, Agar Malwa district of Madhya Pradesh,” the ministry said on Wednesday.

In Maharashtra, the swarm split into two groups. This was after spraying pesticide between Monday night and Tuesday morning. One group is moving towards Parseoni, Nagpur while the other entered Bhandara.

Ravindra Bhosale, divisional joint director agriculture said,

“The swarm travelled over 100 km on Wednesday from Andhalgaon, Mohadi taluka back into Ramtek tehsil in Nagpur, and again into Tumsar Bhandara. They have settled at orchards surrounding Temani,”.

Also, The state agriculture department issued a ‘locust warning alert’. This is for all 11 districts in Vidarbha and four districts in north Maharashtra.

Odisha government on Wednesday issued guidelines for farmers in the state. Also, They have asked them to take preventive steps suggested in this regard.

For prevention, farmers need to spray their crops with a solution based on neem seeds extract mixing with water. Also, they can spray their crops with neem-based pesticides. They are available in the market . One has to only mix with water as suggested in the guidelines.

Also, there are chances that soon they will enter Delhi and other parts.
